I'm In Catch Up Mode Amongst Other Things...

My work load has been picking up in school so I’ve been taking care of business. I’m glad to see things back up and running with my blog. It’s funny though, sometimes with the unexpected comes a much needed break. I’m working on writing some reviews and giveaways, a list that has been pushed backed far enough now.

I guess it’s time to let you in on a little sumin’ sumin’ I’ve been working on. No, this isn’t the project that I spoke about in my last post; I’ll let you know about that one. This is more personal. A few years ago I toyed around with it, I even made mention of it in a small post I did. It’s something that I started a couple of times but both times I chickened out and went back to the drawing board. So, what’s different this time you ask? Well I’m glad you asked. I’ve gotten so much love and support from family, friends and believe it or not from you, my bloggin’ buddies. And just to name a few of you lovely ladies, Renee who told me about the importance of moisture, Yolanda who gave me some links to helpful resources, Dara who gave me three words; wide tooth comb, and finally, Sheliza who told me about Fantasia IC Hair Polisher. All of these are good tips that I didn’t know about before. I’m giving it away aren’t I? Well, not completely. But you do know that it has something to do with hair.

My family and some of my close friends are behind me all the way. On the days that it gets difficult they keep me encouraged. Hubby has been phenominal! Then there are all the websites and video tutorials that teach, motivate and assist you in this journey. I call it a journey because it’s a decision that takes time to decide, the process takes even longer time (depending on which way you do it), and during the whole time you’re discovering a new part of you.

Isn’t it funny when you buy a new car or are looking to buy a particular car how you all of a sudden start seeing that car more than you ever have before? I know that’s happened to me so many times. Or, you buy a new pair of shoes and then a week or two later you see that shoe all over the place? Well since making my decision and committing to going through with it, it’s all I’ve been seeing and finding more and more help with it. For example, just yesterday I was browsing through and old Essence Magazine, Sept. 08 collector’s edition with Barack Obama and his family on the cover, and I just so happen to open the magazine to page 56 with an article titled Twirl Girl. It looked interesting, again dealing with the same thing I’m talking about, so I read it and found out that they are right here in Atlanta and go figure I was just about 5 minutes away from the shop. The shop is called Urbanbella and was started as an online curlygirl chat room. It’s owned by a lady (who’s so sweet in person) by the name of Keneesha Hudson. Atlanta’s Urbanbella is like a Sephora for hair – kinky, curly and wavy hair and it’s located right in Buckhead. So you know what I did right, I called and told them that I’d be right over. As soon as D. and I walked in we could smell the hair products they use and they smelled so good. One of the products that she talked to us about was Miss Jessie’s which is one of her favorite lines. The other was Hair Rules.

I think the cat is out of the bag, well maybe not for all of you. Ok, I’ll spell it out for you, I a m g o I n g n a t u r a l!!! I’m going natural!!! So in a nut shell what does that mean? I’m allowing my natural hair to grow out and finally ridding myself of the chemical relaxer. Currently I’m 5 ½ weeks overdue for a perm and have about 4 ½” of new growth. A few months ago I stopped coloring my hair and just started to accept the salt in my hair, I mean my gray hair. I may color it later on because they seem to show up so much more with my natural hair, still teeter tottering around with the idea. So you may have already started to notice the difference in my pictures in the previous posts.

Wish me well on my journey! I’m excited but still need all the encouragement that I can get.

Good night!

  6. Congrats girl~ it truly is a big step and a commitment. I went natural some years back and while i had a few too many fights with the comb (the comb being the winner) I will say that it was one of the best decisions that I've made. my hair is thick and so healthy and when I want it straight guess what? I press it... it's so versatile i love it. although I still have my bad days and you will have those but it's still a great choice... go Lisa go Lisa!

  7. Torrance ~ Hope you had a good one too.

Sheliza ~ Thanks lady, you're so kind :) I told ya he was working on his things to do list. LOL! Things are running smoothly again.

Yolanda ~ I can't thank you enough for those sites girl, I've learned so much! Pictures are coming soon. I'm having so much fun styling the girls hair too!!

Sandy ~ Thanks so much for the encouragement, this is exactly what I need. So far things are going well. I haven't done any different styles as yet...still wearing my head-wraps. Can't wait to visit Urbanbella to learn about styling options. I was going to get it braided but I've since put that on hold. Can't seem to find a braided hair style that D. and me both like or should I say agree on :)

  8. The "natural fever" is going around big time! You look like you'll be able to sport it well. I'm giving it some thought, but I'm not quite sure yet.

My daughter decided to do so last year and we just cut off the last bit of relaxed hair this summer. She is very happy.

  10. YAY Lisa! I'm stoked about this change. You will LOVE natural hair - at least I hope you do. It's so liberating and freshing. All this best in this new hair journey, my sistah.

  11. Shelia ~ Yay for your daughter!! I think you would sport it well too and you know first hand what a commitment it's going to take. I've been hearing that it'll take around a year to grow out the perm (on average). Seems like a long time but I'm going to enjoy the many different styles I'll be able to wear.

Sheena ~ Girl, if you only knew how many you would be shocked!!! Thanks so much for your email, it helped.

Ana ~ Thanks for the encouraging words, Sis! I can agree, it's been liberating so far.
