Good Hair, What’s Your Definition?

Chris Rock has a new documentary coming out titled, Good Hair. I think it’s a wonderful film that quickly get’s your attention and has you asking the question, what does having good hair mean to you? The answers to this question in the film vary so wildly it gives you an appreciation for how many different views we have on this topic. He was propelled to create the film after one of his little girls came running to his arms and asked him, “Daddy, why don’t I have good hair?”
While watching this short clip I immediately was reassured of my decision to go natural and to never put a perm in any of my daughters hair. It was the best thing I could have ever done. Have you ever heard of the term, creamy crack? Well if you haven’t, that’s what many women refer to perm, especially when it’s time for a touch-up. Are you kidding me? Creamy Crack? Does that even sound healthy for you? Sadly I can understand why this name came about. When it’s time for a touch-up we get to acting crazy, especially when the edges get a little nappy. But what’s so wrong with napps? If we were better equipped with knowledge, tools, products then the “napps” wouldn’t be such a problem. That’s the truth! I had no idea that for many, many years I was using the wrong tools in mine and my girls hair. If you don’t know any better then I guess the “creamy crack” just has to do. The problem is the same as being addicted to Crack on the streets; the addiction will only lead to damaged hair. Hair is a great place to start if you want to begin your journey to the natural you, Nappturality.
I was walking in the mall with a friend of mine the other day and a beautiful sistah walked  past us who was wearing a natural hairdo. My friend made a comment and said, “wow, her hair is alive”. I thought that was beautifully put!
The film is scheduled to air some time in October and what I’m hoping for is a wake up call across the nation for us women to take pride in our natural hair and stop torturing our hair to look “un-natural”. When our little girls see these models and Hollywood actresses with long straight hair that’s all they see to deem as beautiful. Yes, through the years Hollywood has made an effort to show more natural hair styles but there is still a stereotype that exists which leads to little girls asking, why don’t I have good hair? Many of them are not aware of the fact that the straight hair we see is  a weave! My husband said that he would like to know what they really look like up under all that fake hair. I stand to say that he’s probably not alone on this one. What would Meagan Goode and Lauren London “really” look like if their natural hair was permitted to be seen? (I only use these two ladies as examples because they are in the film), I’m not picking on them. I believe we need to encourage our young ladies to accept, embrace and fall in love with what’s naturally theirs because it is Beautiful!
Take a look at the clip and let me know what your reaction is. It’s got to spark something inside of you. If you’re pro perm, than share why? If not, do share!
And oh yeah, you’re in for a real treat because what would it be if it wasn’t funny, you know how Chris Rock does!!

  2. I am actually aganist the relaxer because it has a negative effect on us as african women. to have good hair means that it is supposed to be straight or soft and wavy and curly .. but that term came from segregation and from our own people when we began to self segregate the light skin from dark skin. i tell my daughters that thier hair is good hair becuase it is stronger, shinier and beautiful. my daughter was recently reased for having locs and when i explained to her what a relaxer does to the hair, her confidence went up. we must tell our daughters the truth and live it... good hair is healthy hair and if you do have a relaxer and decide that is what;s best for you then find the best way to keep your hair healthy as well.
